If you actually have noticed that you can start in Excel by default a cell entry has never been with a slash ("/")? You can try to enter this character, but nothing is displayed.
Instead, the menu or the ribbon is enabled. It has the same effect as if you press the [Alt] key. But with a change in the program settings you can change this behavior so that the slash is displayed also at the beginning of a cell.
